How it started

A Vision Born from Culture and Passion

Sunshine Braidz was founded in 2014 by Linda Onyema, a skilled braider who grew up watching her aunts and grandmother weave intricate patterns into their family's hair back in Nigeria. When Linda moved to Scarborough, Toronto, she carried those traditions with her — and a burning ambition to share them.

What started as a small studio in a shared salon space has grown into a beloved community destination. Word spread fast: clients came for the flawless box braids and stayed for the warm, welcoming atmosphere Linda and her team create every single day.

Today, Sunshine Braidz serves women and girls of all ages, offering everything from classic cornrows and knotless braids to special occasion styling for weddings and graduations. Every appointment is treated as a personal experience — not a transaction.

Our team of six certified braiding specialists brings a combined 40+ years of experience. We stay at the forefront of protective styling trends while honouring the ancestral techniques that make African braiding an art form.

We are committed to using only high-quality, natural hair care products and the finest braiding techniques available.

Our Vision

What We Stand For

Four principles guide everything we do at Sunshine Braidz.

Excellence in Craft

We never cut corners. Every braid is set with precision, care, and artistic intention — from the first section to the final knot.

Protective styling should protect — not damage. We use gentle, nourishing products that keep your natural hair thriving underneath every style.

Community & Culture

Our salon is a cultural gathering place. We honour African braiding traditions and create an inclusive space for women of all backgrounds.

Client-First Always

Your satisfaction is our only measure of success. We listen, consult, and personalise every session to fit your lifestyle and vision.

Our Journey

2014 — Founded

A Shared Studio Becomes a Dream

Linda Onyema opens Sunshine Braidz in a corner of a shared Scarborough salon, bringing Nigerian braiding traditions to Toronto's diverse community.

2016 — First Standalone Location

Growing Into Our Own Space

Client demand led to opening our first dedicated salon. We hired our first two specialist stylists and began offering Senegalese twists and Havana twists alongside cornrows and box braids.

2019 — Community Recognition

Award-Winning Artistry

Recognised by the Scarborough Business Network as a standout community business. We introduced our popular New Client Discount and Referral Programme to give back to our growing clientele.

2022 — Expansion & Team Growth

Six Specialists, Endless Styles

We expanded our team to six certified braiders, launched our online booking system, and added knotless braids and special occasion bridal styling to our signature service menu.

2024 – Present

Sunshine Shines Brighter

Today, Sunshine Braidz serves 500+ loyal clients across Toronto. We continue to innovate, mentor young braiders, and honour the cultural traditions that inspired us from day one.
